Getting Started

Before you get started entering textbooks, be sure you read this article on getting started with scheduling.

Candle comes pre-seeded with several hundred textbooks including publishers Christian Light, Rod & Staff, Abeka, Gospel Publishers, and Pathway. Before adding a textbook manually, be sure that the book is not already entered. Most textbooks have chapter and lesson names pre-entered.

Adding a Textbook

1. Go to Setup and under the title Curriculum, choose Textbooks.

2. You will see all the textbook currently entered in the system. Click the Add Textbook button in the upper-right corner.

3. Enter the A-title, B-ISBN (if desired), C-grade level, D-subject, and E-publisher. Finally select whether to use Christian Light's LightUnit template or to enter a generic textbook with the ability to customize the layout. Then click Next.

4. On the next screen, you will see options to customize the textbook layout:

Chapters-select whether or not the book has chapters. This will slightly affect how the rest of the screen is laid out. Since with chapters is the most likely use case, we have those details here.
A - Enter the total number of lessons in the book.
B - What is each lesson or group of work prefixed with? Some publishers use Lesson, some use Group, etc. There are several options pre-filled for you. Be sure to include a space after the text you enter if you want a space between the lesson name and the number.
C - Which lessons end the chapters or the units? Here we have a total of 90 lessons in the book, and every tenth lesson, a new chapter starts.
D - How should the chapters be prefixed?
E - Most textbooks start at Lesson 1 and continue on through Lesson 90, or however far they go. You can also choose By Chapter to re-start lesson numbering with each chapter.
F - Some textbook publishers use lesson letters instead of lesson numbers. For example, Rod & Staff uses Group A, Group B, etc. for their Science curriculum.
G - What lesson ends each unit/chapter? Often, the last lesson ends up being a chapter quiz, review or test. Here, you can specify that.

4, cont. Finally, when the details are all provided, click Preview Lessons.
5. This will generate the textbook as described. You will see a list of the lessons generated:

Here you can make adjustments like renaming lessons, changing titles, re-ordering lessons and changing their assignment types. The grid has standard data editing features. For some tips, see the section of Editing a Textbook.
Importing Pre-type Lesson Titles—Sometimes users will type the contents of a textbook into a program like Notepad. To import these lesson titles, click Import Text in the upper right-hand corner. Copy the lesson titles from the other program, then paste the text into the box provided. Click Import. This will insert the titles in their respective order into the grid.
Re-calculating Lessons—if you see that you've made a mistake in generating the chapter and lesson sequence, click Back in the lower-left corner. Tweak the textbook layout and click Preview Lessons. Repeat until you've achieved the desired results. Warning! This will remove any changes you've made to the lessons in the list.
